How did you team up with Favre-Leuba?
It was actually at a meeting in Baselworld this time last year. A friend of mine spotted the brand and suggested that they might be interested in teaming up with Arctic Mission. I am the director of the mission, which is concerned with marine ecosystem research in the Central Arctic Ocean and public awareness of the issues that this ecosystem faces due to sea-ice loss. This is seen as a geophysical issue but it is actually a habitat issue because animals live above the sea ice, on the sea ice (bears, Arctic foxes and walruses), in the ice itself, and below it.

For over 20 years now.

On Friday 26 January at the Hublot boutique in Milan, Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot watches, and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode announced the Big Bang Depeche Mode "The Singles" Limited Edition, a limited edition of 55 uniques pieces, one for each single and all based on the iconic Hublot Big Bang model. Net proceeds from the sale of these pieces will be go to charity: water, as part of the larger charity initiative between Depeche Mode, Hublot and charity: water. The watch brand and the music band will officially present the charity organization with a cheque for all funds raised during the partnership.

First presented at the Basel Fair in 1957, the 9P calibre measuring just 2mm thick opened up whole new vistas of visual expression. Its slenderness left more room for the dial, enabling Piaget to reverse its creative approach by no longer working around the watch face, but instead taking the latter as its starting point. Its purpose being to catch and hold the gaze and the use of coloured stones was a natural choice. Hard stones provide an exceptional palette of colours that designers explored making light of any technical constraints. The Maison called upon the finest specialists and cooperated with them in developing unique expertise, and as of 1963, more than 30 different stones were to find their place in Piaget’s collection. Time could now be read in lapis lazuli, turquoise, coral, jade, tiger’s eye, malachite, opal… with or without diamonds, since Piaget overturned the existing hierarchy of materials and thereby heralded one of the greatest trends of contemporary jewellery. What could be more legitimate than for the Maison to present a new interpretation of stone marquetry in the setting of the Altiplano, its eminent ambassador of Art & Excellence timepieces?

Bell & Ross’s saga started in an aircraft cockpit and was driven by the ambition of designing watches directly inspired by aeronautical instrumentation, the ultimate point of reference regarding precision, legibility and reliability.

How is Hublot doing?
We passed through the crisis quite well because we were still growing while the industry as a whole was shrinking. We had yet another record year in 2017 with growth of 12 per cent in sales but there are also some explanations for this. For example, China is by no means our biggest market, as it is for many other brands. We have been building the brand in China for over 10 years now and it is now starting to take off with the new generation of Chinese millennials. So growth came last year from Greater China (China, Hong Kong and Macau) where we grew 30 per cent, but from a much lower base of course, since Greater China only accounts for 9 per cent of our total sales. Our objective is 30 per cent, so there is still plenty of potential. The Chinese customer seems to be looking for something different and I think with the strong identity of our products and our art of fusion we are well placed to serve them. 

Guy Sémon has been appointed Director of the Research Institute for the Watch Division of the LVMH Group, which includes the TAG Heuer, Hublot and Zenith brands. Guy Sémon will continue to report directly to Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of TAG Heuer and President of the Division.

This new Sideralis boasts a distinctive red aventurine caseback. Aventurine is the product of an experiment by a seventeenth-century glass worker, who dipped copper flakes into molten glass. The constellation of sparkling particles produced a beautiful effect – and aventurine was born. 

Cvstos develops its Inkvaders collection by transforming its famous Skull designed by Christian Nguyen into an intimidating Pirate of the Caribbean. These very limited series of about 10 to 20 pieces each celebrate the rich partnership that Cvstos has with the famous tattoo artist and designer Christian Nguyen, founder of the studio 'Inkvaders' in Geneva.
