It is a sign of the times that Breitling decided to launch a new collection not at a major trade fair, nor even in Switzerland, but at a swish event in London attended by selected journalists and the ever-present influencers. Undoubtedly the most important announcement at this event was the return of a name familiar to those who know Breitling’s history: the Premier.

Van Cleef & Arpels will no longer be present at the SIHH, which is why the Parisian jeweller is unveiling its new creations in a somewhat offbeat manner, without regard to any particular schedule, at exclusive sessions. The theme for 2019 is the next chapter of a story that Van Cleef & Arpels loves to tell, featuring one of its favourite narrative themes: poetic astronomy. These exceptional new pieces belong to a family of twelve watches named Lady Arpels Zodiac Lumineux.

Roger Dubuis is convinced that women are as keen as men to wear daring and technical calibres. The brand sees woman as someone sensitive to both aesthetics and technology, setting her own goals, writing her own rulebook and standing out from the crowd. Like Roger Dubuis women, shooting stars are oblivious to the rules, which is why they have been chosen to confer a feminine look at the Excalibur Single Flying Tourbillon - Shooting Star. Enriched with alternative techniques, this timepiece is available in a choice of blue, white and pink interpretations, all issued in eight-piece limited editions.

The Watch Photo Awards, which were launched in the spring, reward the best watch photos submitted on a different theme every month, from May to October 2018.  At the end of each monthly competition, the WPA jury selects ten photos, according to the criteria of creativity, relevance to the theme and technical proficiency. These ten photos are published by the WPA’s media partners. The public then votes for the best of those ten.

HYT - An earthy H20

Une H20 terrestre

Une H20 terrestre

The H20 expands on the concept introduced by the H0, picking up its main aesthetic features and the central concept of showcasing liquids rather than the movement. In 2017, the young HYT took a step back to rethink and magnify its original idea of fluid time. The result of these reflections was a more minimalist H0, designed to allow the eyes to slide over the watch and focus on the liquids. Thanks to the rounded dome that covers the case, there’s an excellent view from every angle, opening up a three-dimensional approach to time. And that’s the key. The concept of three-dimensionality which is so important to HYT is also a watchword for the current generation (in the form of virtual reality, artificial intelligence and 3D cinema), which helps to explain the H0’s genesis, from a reflection on contemporary life and a desire to bring a 3D vision to the watch.

Halloween - Clockwork orange

Let me be clear from the outset: you won’t find any skulls in this article. It’s about Halloween, the contraction of “Hallows’ Evening”. Although it is a celebration that, in religious terms, is dedicated to remembering the dead, its origins date back earlier to the harvest festivals. Because some cultures encouraged abstinence from meat at this time of year, a fruit and a vegetable have come to be associated with the day. For the Anglo Saxons, toffee apples or candy apples have long been associated with Halloween, but it is the pumpkin that is by far the most readily associated with food around Halloween. We see them carved out and illuminated outside people’s houses, baked into pies and cakes and even incorporated into pasta by the Italians.

Emile Chouriet - Soleos

Soleos

The Soleos features a three-dimensional dial in a shimmery silvery-white tone, further enhancing its shine. It is embossed with a sunray pattern, extending to the applied golden faceted markers and matching hands and beyond the dial to the crenellated golden bezel. Also crenellated and fashioned in a gold-tone, the bezel complements the round stainless steel case. The lugs feature Emile Chouriet’s signature flared wing-shaped lugs, but with a more streamlined design that continues the harmonious lines of the case.

Suspense defines La Carrera Panamericana all the way to the finish line

After 7 days of extreme competition and surviving an accident on the dangerous Morelia’s road in Michoacán, Hilaire and Laura Damiron crossed the finish line at Durango in second position with their Studebaker 1954 model “El Commander”. After winning all the timed stages during the last two days of the race, they were on the heels of Emilio Velazquez and Christian Coronel, the winner’s team. Summing up a total time of 5 hours 20 minutes and 09 seconds on the speed stages, Hilaire and Laura took second place on the podium at the prize ceremony last Friday.

Fabergé - Fabergé’s new 10-year warranty

If you visit the websites of some of the major watch brands as a customer, you might be surprised to find that warranty information is at best well hidden and at worst non-existent. Some of the biggest brands in the industry offer helpful advice on how to look after your watch, yet do not mention what their own guarantee periods are. Notable exceptions are Rolex, which clearly mentions the fact that is has offered a five-year guarantee on all watches sold after July 2015. Smaller brands like Ulysse Nardin and Montandon & Co also offer five-year warranties. The current record is held by Panerai, which offered a 50-year guarantee for the Luminor 1950 Carbotech™ model launched two years ago at the SIHH.
